Refund policy
Returns & Refund Policy
At The Newport Curiosity Shop, we sell a mixture of new, vintage, antique, pre-owned and collectible goods.
We aim to describe and photograph all products as accurately as reasonably possible.
Nothing in this policy affects your statutory rights under UK consumer law.
Change-of-Mind Returns
For most goods purchased online, you have the right to cancel your order within 14 days of receiving it.
You must contact us within this 14-day period to tell us that you wish to cancel.
After notifying us, you normally have a further 14 days to return the goods.
You do not need to give a reason for a statutory change-of-mind cancellation.
Return Postage
For a change-of-mind return, you are responsible for the direct cost of returning the item to us.
We recommend using an appropriately tracked and insured service, particularly for valuable, fragile, antique or one-of-a-kind items.
If an item is faulty, damaged in transit or materially not as described, please contact us before returning it so that we can arrange the appropriate return process.
Condition of Returned Goods
You may inspect an item to the extent reasonably necessary to establish its nature, characteristics and functioning, in a similar way to how you would inspect an item in a shop.
Returned goods should be appropriately packaged to protect them during transit.
If your handling of the item goes beyond what is reasonably necessary and causes a reduction in its value, we may make an appropriate deduction from the refund where permitted by law.
Vintage, Antique and Pre-Owned Goods
Vintage, antique and pre-owned items should not be expected to be in new condition unless expressly stated.
They may show characteristics consistent with their age and previous use, including:
- scratches;
- marks;
- patina;
- tarnishing;
- fading;
- crazing;
- chips;
- dents;
- previous repairs;
- manufacturing irregularities; and
- general age-related wear.
We make reasonable efforts to disclose significant condition issues through our photographs and product descriptions.
Where an imperfection, repair, mark or other characteristic was clearly shown or described before purchase, that characteristic forms part of the condition in which the item was sold.
This does not affect your statutory rights if an item is faulty or materially not as described.
New Goods
Products described as new are supplied as new goods.
If a new product is faulty, unsafe, not as described or otherwise fails to meet your statutory consumer rights, please contact us.
Faulty, Damaged or Incorrectly Described Goods
If an item arrives damaged, is faulty, unsafe or materially different from its description, please contact us as soon as reasonably possible.
Please provide your order number and, where appropriate, photographs of:
- the item;
- the damage or fault;
- the outer packaging;
- internal packaging; and
- the delivery label.
We may request this information to investigate the issue or make a claim with the delivery carrier.
Please retain the item and its packaging until we advise you that they are no longer required.
Your statutory rights are not affected by these requests.
Refunds
Where you validly exercise your statutory right to cancel, we will refund the amount due within the period required by law.
Where goods have been returned, we may wait until we receive the goods back or you provide evidence that they have been sent back, where permitted by law.
Refunds will normally be made using the same payment method used for the original purchase unless otherwise agreed.
Original Delivery Charges
For an eligible statutory cancellation, we will refund the cost of the least expensive standard delivery service offered for the order.
If you chose a more expensive or upgraded delivery option, such as express or next-day delivery, we are not required to refund the additional amount paid above the standard delivery cost.
Returning Goods Safely
Unless we have arranged the return ourselves, you are responsible for packaging returned goods appropriately.
Fragile, antique and collectible items should be packaged carefully to reduce the risk of damage during return transit.
We strongly recommend retaining proof of postage and using adequate insurance for valuable items.
Repairs or Alterations
If you believe an item is faulty, please contact us before attempting to repair, restore, alter or modify it where reasonably possible.
Damage caused by an attempted repair, restoration or alteration may affect the remedies available in relation to that additional damage.
This does not remove any statutory rights relating to an original fault.
Items Excluded From Change-of-Mind Cancellation
Certain products may be exempt from the normal statutory right to cancel, including where applicable:
- personalised or custom-made goods;
- certain perishable goods;
- certain sealed goods that are unsuitable for return for health or hygiene reasons once unsealed; and
- other goods exempt under applicable consumer law.
Any applicable exemption will be identified where reasonably appropriate.
These exemptions do not remove your rights where goods are faulty or incorrectly described.
Cancelling Before Dispatch
If you wish to cancel an order before it has been dispatched, please contact us as soon as possible.
If we are able to stop the order before dispatch, we will cancel it and issue the appropriate refund.
