Artemisia vulgaris — Mugwort

Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is an ancient and fascinating herb with a long history in European and wider northern-hemisphere folklore.

Although today it is often found growing wild on roadsides, waste ground and neglected places, Mugwort has been associated with traditional customs and seasonal celebrations for centuries. Its botanical name, Artemisia, has traditionally been linked with Artemis, the Greek goddess associated with the moon, wilderness and protection.

Traditional & Historical Folklore

Mugwort has played an important role in European folk traditions, particularly around midsummer. In some traditions, garlands or belts made from Mugwort were worn during midsummer celebrations and later thrown into the ceremonial fire.

The plant was also strongly associated with travellers. Sprigs of Mugwort were historically carried or worn as symbolic protection during journeys, giving the herb a longstanding reputation as a traveller’s companion.

Bundles of Mugwort were traditionally hung around homes, doorways and outbuildings. Its strongly aromatic foliage also made dried Artemisia plants popular for use around the home and among stored textiles.
