Vintage Mid-Century Vallauris Ceramic Leaf Centrepiece Dish, France, c.1950s–60s
A wonderfully striking vintage French Vallauris ceramic centrepiece dish, dating to around the 1950s–1960s, with a fabulous sculptural tomato and leaf design.
The dish is beautifully modelled as a cluster of large overlapping leaves, each with deeply moulded veins and irregular, organic edges. The wonderfully expressive glaze combines rich earthy browns and ochres with vibrant splashes of red, green, turquoise, cream and black, producing the dramatic colour and texture so characteristic of mid-century Vallauris pottery.
At the centre sits a wonderfully sculptural tomato, glazed in vivid glossy red with contrasting green leafy detail. Surrounded by the sweeping moulded leaves, it gives the piece a playful yet highly decorative three-dimensional quality.
The pottery town of Vallauris in the South of France became internationally renowned during the post-war period for its innovative ceramics. Its potters embraced bold colours, experimental glazes and imaginative organic forms, and this unusual centrepiece captures that exuberant Mediterranean mid-century aesthetic beautifully.
Both decorative and functional, it would make a fantastic table centrepiece, fruit dish or statement display piece. Its generous proportions, vivid colouring and unusual botanical form would work particularly well in a mid-century modern, eclectic or maximalist interior.
A fabulous and characterful example of vintage French decorative ceramics, and an especially eye-catching piece for a collector of Vallauris and mid-century pottery.
